2013 was a good year for butt augmentation and neck lifts

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons released their annual results on plastic surgery procedures in the U.S., reporting 15.1 million cosmetic procedures in 2013, a 3% increase from 2012.
Some of the findings were expected. For instance, breast implants remain the top cosmetic surgical procedure and Botox remained the top minimally invasive procedure. Interestingly, the procedures that are gaining popularity are buttock augmentation and neck lifts. Below are some of the most popular procedures Americans are going under the knife for.

What exactly is a liquid facelift? Well, it’s not a facelift, but a non-surgical reshaping and smoothing of the face using injectable facial, or dermal fillers. Injectable fillers have come a long way and products such as Juvéderm® Ultra Plus, Juvéderm® Voluma®, and Radiesse®, can be used alone or in combination to achieve real results without surgery. They are sometimes also used with a cosmetic toxin such as BOTOX® or Xeomin®. Together, we can help to reduce lines and wrinkles, restore plumpness, and even reshape areas — without surgery.
By using a combination of injectable fillers and/or muscle immobilizing products such as Botox, lines can be minimized or erased, and sagging skin lifted and filled out.
With injectable products, you can dramatically improve appearances without the downtime of surgery. Ppeople who have mild jowls, volume loss, vertical lip lines, crow’s feet, lines along the side of the nose and chin — sometimes called marionette lines — can benefit greatly. Also, injectable products can correct asymmetries and even those bands in the neck below the chin that become prominent with age.

How drastic are the effects?

No one should be able to tell that you had a liquid facelift or any cosmetic work, essentially. You should simply enjoy comments from people such as, ‘Wow, you look fantastic, what did you do different?

Which product is right for you?

ingjection
Some of the new fillers with hyaluronic acid — such as Juvederm — are popular and well-tolerated because the hyaluronic acid is a natural substance in the body, thus less likely to have allergy issues. Those fillers tend to be more expensive than a filler such as Radiesse, but both last eight to 10 months. Each product has a unique set of factors that might make one a better choice for you than another, so a consultation will determine which is the perfect option for you.

What are they?
Denevervating agents (onabotulinumtoxina), available as Botox and Xeomin work by temporarily reducing muscle activity to inhibit wrinkle formation, specifically between-brow lines that resemble the number 11. By decreasing forehead furrowing, they eliminate wrinkles and fine lines that currently exist and also prevent new ones from forming, making them favorites of patients of all ages.
In addition to cosmetic applications, many of which are considered off-label (see below), Botox is also FDA-approved for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Xeomin is approved to treat abnormal spasms of the eyelids (blepharospasm) in adults who have had prior treatment with Botox. Xeomin is considered a more purified version of botulinum toxin type A than Botox because it does not have any protein additives. Some say this may help lower the risk of allergy to the product, as they believe the allergy risk is associated with these proteins. Xeomin is also the first denervating agent that does not need to be refrigerated before use.
Denervating agents have played a major part in the age of injectables, and doctors continue to find new and novel uses for them, as well as innovative ways to use them in conjunction with fillers.
Uses:

  • Eliminating wrinkles and lines caused by movement
  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Creating wider-looking eyes *
  • Fixing scars *
  • Reducing pore size *
  • Lifting the top of the nose *
  • Lessening a gummy smile *
  • Treating migraines and TMJ *
  • Eliminating neck bands and cleavage wrinkles *
  • Temporarily improving the appearance of frown lines and crow’s-feet
  • Treating chronic migraines, defined as 15 or more headache days a month, each lasting 4 or more hours
(*indicates an off-label use)
Treatments and ResultsJust like injectable fillers, a topical anesthetic may be applied to make treatment more comfortable. Then, over roughly 10 minutes (depending on how many areas are being treated), your doctor will strategically place several injections.
Although the overall experience is the same as with Botox and Xeomin, the main difference is that Dysport kicks in quicker—the results can usually be seen in a day or two, whereas Botox and Xeomin typically take three to five days. The results of both are believed to last about the same amount of time: on average, three months. However, after a series of injections, Dysport may last up to six months.
Side Effects and RisksYou may be red or bruised at the injection site for up to a few days, and in rare instances, patients have reported mild flu-like symptoms after treatment.

While the new year will see many attempt to turn over a new leaf, it seems certain old habits die much harder than others – especially when it comes to beauty.
According to Transform, cosmetic and non-surgical cosmetic procedures will still be very much en trend in the UK in 2014.
“There is a growing awareness of the different types of surgery available to people, coupled with the increasing desire to look and feel at your best,” says Shami Thomas from Transform. “Patients come to us as they want to feel good about their bodies and surgery can help them, and ultimately improve their self-confidence.
“Whilst surgical procedures are still very popular, it’s the non-surgical procedures that are proving to be a key theme and this trend is set to continue into 2014 and beyond.”
Here are Transform’s predictions for the hottest cosmetic surgery trends for 2014:
Breast Surgery
Responsible for over 80,000 breast augmentations, Transform shines the spotlight firmly on society’s fascination with women’s twin peaks and suggests that the allure of boobs – whether to have them bigger, smaller or more pert – will continue to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the UK. Welcome news for a country that is united in its love for all things boobilicous.
Chin Implants
Women will continue to aspire to capture Hollywood glamour and opt to have chin implants – a procedure revealed in 2013 to have been undertaken by movie starlet, Marilyn Monroe. The procedure adds definition and balances facial features, producing instant and significant changes in the profile of patients – serving to inject a new bout of confidence into those with a weak or receding chin.
Enquiries for chin implants have doubled since 2010, with 60% of queries coming from women wishing to alter the silhouette of their faces and Transform expects the desire for a striking and defined chin to continue far into 2014.
Tummy Tucks
For those who’ve been left with excess skin after losing weight or following having a baby, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is fast becoming the solution for many unconfident Brits. For those left hanging with stretched skin, and weakened muscles, this is fast becoming one of the most popular procedures as it takes away loose skin and tightens up the muscles. And 2014 is sure to see a continued rise in people wanting to fold up their saggy skin and opt for a slimmer, more toned tummy.
Brachioplasty or ‘Bingo Wing’ Surgery
Brachioplasty is the removal of excess, aging skin from the upper arms – often referred to as ‘bingo wings’ and gives tighter, more toned and youthful arms. An ever increasingly popular treatment among mature ladies who feel self-conscious about their ‘flappy’ upper arms or for those who have lost significant amounts of weight and want to tighten up the skin.
Vaginoplasty
The quest for a ‘designer vagina’ has intensified, with labiaplasty and vaginoplasty amongst the UK’s fastest growing cosmetic surgery procedures.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of, or reshape, the labia minora – either for medical or aesthetic reasons – while vaginoplasty ‘tightens’ the vagina, a procedure that is particularly popular among women who have given birth.
Transform reports that enquiries for the procedures have grown from 2,400 in 2010 to over 3,500 in 2013. Such results suggest that more and more women will feel empowered to undergo a vaginoplasty procedure in the coming year – and this is certainly set to be the surgery on everyone’s lips in 2014.
Non-surgical
2013 saw a whole host of celebrities under the spotlight as having undergone non-surgical treatments from Kim Kardashian to Coleen Rooney and Sharon Osbourne. With non-surgical procedures accounting for 75% of the cosmetic industry*, these treatments are the ones to watch.
The Non-Surgical Face-Lift
Anti-ageing treatments such as dermal fillers, Botox and chemical facial peels are fast becoming a must on beauty-lovers’ lists.
And combined, they provide the ideal ‘face-lift’ that is seen to be taking over the surgical face-lift; they restore the contour of the face without the need for any surgery.
A combination of wrinkle and line smoothing treatments, and dermal fillers result in a more refreshed, and line-free look that plumps up skin, minimises marionette lines and gives a rejuvenated look that is proving ideal for today’s youth-seekers. An increasing number of women want to stop the signs of ageing without surgery – and with such glowing results and minimal recovery time after these procedures, we’ll see the trend for non-surgical facelifts continue for years to come.
Laser Hair Removal
A treatment used for the removal of excess or unwanted hair, laser hair removal works by destroying the base of the hair follicle that is the source of new hair growth. Used on a variety of skin types, with minimum fuss and maintenance, it’s becoming the number one choice for those on the go wanting smooth, hair-free body zones.
