Juvederm Voluma is the newest hyaluronic acid soft tissue filler to the Juvéderm family. As the name suggests, it is used to replace volume to the tissues of the face. Replacing the volume that has been lost through aging can help to restore a more youthful appearance.
Many times, we focus on superficial wrinkles and skin texture. While important, these issues are only part of the effects of aging. Bringing back the contours of the cheeks and chin that start to flatten as we age can do wonders for the overall appearance of the face. Along with treating wrinkles and skin texture, replacing volume creates a foundation beneath the surface to support the skin and diminishes the look of the lines and wrinkles that come with aging.

1. What is Juvederm Voluma? Juvederm Voluma is the Juvederm specialty product for volumizing. It is designed for injection in the deep dermis to treat age-related facial volume loss.
2. How is Juvederm Voluma different from the rest of the family? it is a thick, robust product ideal for injection in the deep dermis to treat age-related facial loss. This product produces an extremely optimal lift that is still smooth and cohesive.
3. Where is Juvederm Voluma intended to be used? Juvederm Voluma is indicated for volumizing of the cheeks, cheekbones, and chin.
4. Can Juvederm Voluma be injected into the lips? No. Because it is such a thick, viscous product, Juvederm Voluma is not appropriate for injection into the lips. Other products in the Juvederm family (such as Ultra or Ultra Plus) are optimally suited for treatment of the lips.
5. Is Juvederm Voluma injected the same as other Juvederm products? Voluma can be injected through either a needle or a cannula; both are supplied with the product. Regardless of physician choice (needle or cannula), careful training and experience are recommended to become familiar with injecting Voluma.
6. How long does Juvederm Voluma last? Clinical trials show the volumizing results of Voluma to last up to 18-24 months.
7. What are the adverse reactions with Juvederm Voluma? The types of adverse events Voluma demonstrates are consistent with other volumizers, but in very low rates.
8. Who is the appropriate patient for Voluma? Patients who can benefit from Voluma are patients with age-related facial volume loss, which may have resulted in a sunken look or facial asymmetry. (One thing to note is that patients with sagging skin are not good candidates for Voluma-these patients may be better served by surgery.)
12. Why should I use Voluma for volumizing as opposed to another Juvederm product? Voluma is specially designed for true volumizing, with deep dermis injections of the product to volumize cheeks, cheekbones, and chin.

FDA Approves New Juvéderm Voluma XC For Adult Midface Volume Loss

New from JUVÉDERM® – JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the cosmetic filler Juvéderm Voluma XC (hyaluronic acid/HA, Allergan).
The HA filler is the first and only filler to be approved for the temporary correction of age-related volume loss in adult patients ages 21 and older, according to a news release. The product is expected very soon, Allergan states.
Juvéderm Voluma XC, uses Allergan’s Vycross technology that results in a smooth gel. It also contains lidocaine to help numb the area during an injection procedure, the company states.
The new Juvederm Voluma XC has a long life, it has reversibility, and it is a product that really is geared to robustly treat the cheek in an efficient way.
The filler is designed to lift. What makes it different is that it uses a lower molecular weight hyaluronic acid that allows for increased cross-linking that gives the product an ideal lift capacity for the midface.
The approval follows the results of a single blinded controlled clinical trial conducted at 15 U.S. and two Canadian sites, which demonstrated efficacy and safety.
Results demonstrated that almost 50 percent of patients were maintaining optimal correction at two years. Similarly, patients demonstrated clinically significant results after almost three years.
Patients received touch-up treatment after 30 days as necessary and were followed up at one month, three months and then quarterly for up to two years, according to the study. Response was determined by two blinded investigators’ assessments at six months based on whether the patient had improved by one point or more on a validated six-month Mid-Face Volume Deficit Scale (MFVDS).
Dermatologists and plastic surgeons are going to be most concerned about patient satisfaction. 90 percent of patients reported feeling that they appeared, on average, five years younger at six months based on analysis of patient diaries. As far out as two years, patient satisfaction was at 76 percent.
The most common adverse effects seen during the clinical trial were injection site tenderness, bruising, redness, discoloration, swelling, lumps/bumps, firmness, itching, and pain that lasted approximately two to four weeks.

FDA Botox News & Botox Specials with Dr. Mark Bishara, MD

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved use of onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox Cosmetic, Allergan) for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe lateral canthal lines, also known as crow’s feet, in adults. Botox Cosmetic is currently the only FDA-approved drug treatment option for lateral canthal lines, the FDA said today.
The agency approved Botox Cosmetic in 2002 for the temporary improvement of glabellar lines (frown lines) in adults. Botox Cosmetic works by keeping muscles from tightening, so wrinkles are less prominent.
Botox Cosmetic is administered via intramuscular injections. Treatment for both frown lines and crow’s feet can be given at the same time, the FDA said.
Boxed Warnings
The approval of Botox Cosmetic for treating lateral canthal lines was based on 2 clinical efficacy and safety studies involving 833 adults with moderate to severe lateral canthal lines who were randomly assigned to receive either Botox Cosmetic or placebo.
The results showed that those treated with Botox Cosmetic had greater improvement compared with placebo in the appearance of lateral canthal lines, the FDA said.
BOTOX® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and also used for the following:

  • to treat overactive bladder symptoms such as a strong need to urinate with leaking or wetting accidents (urge urinary incontinence), a strong need to urinate right away (urgency), and urinating often (frequency) in adults 18 years and older when another type of medicine (anticholinergic) does not work well enough or cannot be taken.
  • to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine who have 15 or more days each month with headache lasting 4 or more hours each day in people 18 years or older
  • to treat increased muscle stiffness in elbow, wrist, and finger muscles in people 18 years and older with upper limb spasticity
  • to treat the abnormal head position and neck pain that happens with cervical dystonia (CD) in people 16 years and older
  • to treat certain types of eye muscle problems (strabismus) or abnormal spasm of the eyelids (blepharospasm) in people 12 years and older
  • to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis) when medicines used on the skin (topical) do not work well enough in people 18 years and older
