This state of the art machine has taken a very tedious and imprecise procedure and made it very efficient and exact. The ARTAS Robot Hair Transplant can generated about 500 follicular unit grafts per hour, translating to about 2,000 grafts per session.
Most importantly, the transection rate is about eight percent, so it is producing a very high quality harvest. Restoration Robotics has carried out several studies using the ARTAS Robot Hair Transplant, which show transection rates using the automated robotic device average eight percent as compared to 20-30 percent transection rates with manual FUE. Perhaps the greatest asset here is that all the complex and imprecise decisions made by the physician in regards to follicle angles, locations, etc. are now computed by complex computer algorithms, eliminating so much of the guess work in manual FUE.

The ARTAS system is a computer assisted system that utilizes image guidance to improve the quality of harvesting the hair follicles.
This machine is capable of solving many of the technical problems that come with the manual FUE technique. Guided by a physician, the robot is able to identify and harvest follicular units and then store them until they are implanted into the patients recipient area using the manual technique.

In the Robotic Hair Transplant ARTAS system patient is prepared by being seated comfortably in the semi-prone position in a specially designed chair, the patient’s hair being cut down to about 1mm in length and a skin tensioner placed on the scalp.
The proprietary skin tensioner improves precision and control of the incision depth. It also has fiduciary markings that, when used in the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant  procedure, allow the imaging system to track patient placement and movement.
The robotic arm is positioned overhead. The physician and only one staff member are required to perform this procedure. The imaging system constantly scans the patient’s scalp and identifies groups of one to three hairs or follicular units. It automatically targets follicular units for harvesting based on configurable input and extracts follicles in random and undetectable patterns at a frequency determined by the physician. Then the follicular units are presently implanted by hand by the surgeon and staff member after a small slit is made in the recipient areas.

Severe acne, daily aspirin, heavy smoking or drinking are all risk factors that have the potential to affect the successful outcome of hair transplantation or other forms of hair restoration surgery. Acne and hair loss are both conditions that effect someone’s appearance, and both are conditions for which effective treatments are available. The patient may not see any obvious relationships between treatment for acne and treatment for hair loss, other than his or her concern for correction of cosmetic deficits. However, a physician hair restoration specialist recognizes that some medical treatments for acne can influence the timing of surgical hair restoration to assure the outcome but rarely prohibits hair restoration surgery.
Side effects of isotretinoin are hair loss and changes in the structure of skin and hair, both of which can influence the outcome of a hair restoration surgery. Blood thinning medication may put a patient at risk for excessive bleeding during and after a surgical procedure. Behavioral risk can also influence the outcome of surgery include heavy tobacco use as well as heavy use of alcohol. Both of these factors can be associated with operative and postoperative risk. Patients should not be shy in revealing behavioral risk factors such as smoking and drinking. The surgeon should know about these risk factors before undertaken any type of surgery. Any patient who neglects to reveal all current and past medical treatments to the hair restoration specialist puts himself/herself at risk for less than optimum hair restoration outcome. No information should be withheld because the patient fails to see its importance to hair loss treatment, or for any reason such as embarrassment about a medical condition currently or recently under treatment.
