A recent study was done to show the effects that Finasteride 5mg (Proscar) has on prostate cancer. The results of this study showed that the overall prevalence of prostate cancer in finasteride-treated men was reduced by 24.8% from the prevalence normally expected in men of that age. These results indicated that finasteride 5mg (Proscar) is effective in preventing or delaying the appearance of prostate cancer. But these results cannot be generalized from finasteride 5mg (Proscar) to the lower dose finasteride 1mg (Propecia), which is commonly given to reduce hair loss. Finasteride 1mg (Propecia) is currently accepted by the Food and Drug Administration as an indication for the safe use in hair loss but is in no way proven to prevent or even delay prostate cancer.

Dear Friends of BCS & HR,
Finesteride has been used for years to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).  One additional benefit has been the reactivation of dormant hair follicles and making miniaturized hair shafts more robust.
Merck has published side effect data that includes but is not limited to erectile dysfunction, persistent decreased libido, and mastodynia or breast pain.   Despite its protective effects against low grade prostate cancer, finesteride has been denied wider indications for its use at the government level.  More long term data will be necessary to determine whether the genetics of androgen receptors on the prostate are modified in prostate cancer in patients with high Gleason scores who previously took finesteride.
Recently an article was published regarding the side effect profile to finesteride.  Not only was it written poorly, it was a biased approach at collecting data from a questionnaire on a biased website.  The selection bias and study design was not only non scientific but they can be reduced to a collection of inflammatory statements that belongs in a magazine rack in the grocery store check out line.
Respectfully yours,
Mark A. Bishara, M.D., P.A., Medical Director
