Scientists have developed a new method for converting soybean oil in a highly effective biosunscreen active ingredient that could replace petroleum-derived ingredients. This new agent does not carry potential health concerns of ingredients in some existing sunscreens such as oxybenzone. Oxybenzone is a suspected hormone disruptor that could contribute to the disruption of aquatic species reproduction. The sales of sunscreens and protective skin care products have been booming and the need for a product with less adverse environmental effects is in demand. Sunscreens today constitute a relatively new family of water contaminants with adverse health effects on wildlife and people.

The sunscreen industry has focused on offering UV-B protection to prevent sunburn. Joseph Laszlo, PhD, The use of ferulic acid along with vegetable oil produces a water-resistant material capable of absorbing both UV-A and UVB light. It can also be used as an antiaging and antiwrinkle product. Laszlo says that skin ages from sun as well as air pollutants and other environmental effects.

He also believes that ferulic acid could prevent some of the damage cause by free-radical processes involved in environmental exposures. Laszlo made a presentation and his findings supported his hypothesis that ferulic acid can reduce impacts of skin sun exposure and demonstrates how agricultural materials can be used to craft safe and useful consumer products.
