The beginning of winter can mean the beginning of skin problems. While Mansfield, Texas might not exactly be considered the tundra, the onset of winter weather here can still wreck havoc on skin. Skin can often become dry, red, irritated, peeling, chapped or wind burned. Harsh winds, low humidity and plummeting temperatures can contribute to an array of problems.
In many cases the skin’s natural protective barrier can become compromised. It is a good idea to be open to using a different moisturizer in winter. This is especially important if the barrier function of skin is not working properly. There are several moisturizers available that will act as an artificial barrier. The best ones will do for the skin what it is not able to do for itself, without congesting or clogging the pores. Skinceuticals Epidermal Repair is a therapeutic treatment for compromised skin. This product minimizes irritations with a calming and soothing effect. It also acts as a protective barrier allowing skin to restore and heal itself. Dermalogica has a great product as well. Barrier repair a a very gentle skin moisturizer soothes sensitized skin and reinforces the protective barrier. It contains no artificial fragrance or color. Either of these products is a terrific winter moisturizer.
Indoor heating, hot showers, baths and caffeine contribute to dehydrated skin. Using a humidifier in your home can help to counteract moisture loss due to indoor heating. Taking short lukewarm showers instead of HOT showers or baths can help keep protective oils on the surface of the skin intact. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily and avoiding caffeine and alcohol will keep skin from becoming dehydrated.
