18th Century

In 1895, surgeon Vincenz Czerny was responsible for the earliest breast implant emplacement. He used the patient’s loose connective tissue from a benign lumbar lipoma, to repair the asymmetry of the breast where he had removed the tumor.

19th Century

Morton I. Berson, in 1945, and Jacques Maliniac, in 1950, each performed flap-based breast augmentations by rotating the patient’s chest wall tissue into the breast to increase its volume.

In the 1950’s, polyurethane, cartilage, wood and even glass balls, were all tried as breast implants. In addition, doctors started inserting sponge implants into women’s breasts. The sponge technique worked well at first, but did not last – the sponges soon shrank, and became “hard as baseballs” says Biggs.
In 1961, the American plastic surgeons Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow, and the Dow Corning Corporation, developed the first silicone breast prosthesis, filled with silicone gel. “Frank Gerow squeezed a plastic blood bag and remarked how much it felt like a woman’s breast,” says Teresa Riordan, author of Inventing Beauty: A History of the Innovations that have Made Us Beautiful.”And he had this ‘Aha!’ moment, where he first conceived of the silicone breast implant.”

1st Silicone Breast Implant

It was spring 1962 when Timmie Jean Lindsey, a mother-of-six lay down on the operating table at Jefferson Davis hospital in Houston, Texas. Over the next two hours, she went from a B to a C cup, in an operation that made history. Lindsey went to the hospital that day to get a tattoo removed from her breasts, and it was then that doctors asked if she would consider volunteering for this first-of-its-kind operation. Fifty years later Timmie Jean Lindsey remains delighted with the results, though there is no stopping the passing of time, she says. She is still very happy with the little piece of history she carries inside her body. “It’s kind of awesome to know that I was first,” she says.

Manufacturing

In 1964, the French company Laboratoires Arion developed and manufactured the saline breast implant, filled with saline solution, and then introduced for use as a medical device in 1964. The significance began to hit home when Cronin presented the work at the International Society of Plastic Surgeons in Washington DC in 1963. “The plastic surgery world was absolutely set on fire with enthusiasm,” says Biggs. It was the decade in which Playboy magazine and Barbie launched.

Fun Facts

In the early days, they only had four choices or sizes – large, medium, small and petite. Now we have over 450 choices! It is 54 years since the first breast enlargement using silicone implants. Today breast augmentation rates as one of the most popular form of cosmetic surgery worldwide, undergone by 1,348,197 women in 2014.

Breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, involves enlarging or reshaping the breast with the use of an implant. If you are thinking about getting breast augmentation surgery, there are a few things you should know before embarking on the process. The first thing is to not be intimidated by the word “surgery”. This type of cosmetic enhancement is one of the most common types of procedures performed in the United States, with thousands of women having breast augmentation done every year.
About Silicone Implants
Silicone implants are considered to be more realistic in that the gel with which they are filled has a similar consistency to breast tissue. Saline implants are firmer and filled with salt water instead of gel. While there is the potential for a silicone gel implant to rupture as a result of an injury, this is a rare event. If it does rupture, the silicone should remain within the implant shell or move to the implant pocket. If a saline implant ruptures, its contents will be absorbed by the body.

  • Silicone is used safely in the body in many medical devices and products, including pacemakers, hear valves, artificial joints and baby pacifiers
  • Silicone gel breast implants are among the most studied medical devices in existence, with thousands of peer-reviewed and published reports on studies
  • Silicone implants have a softer feel that is closer to that of natural breast tissue than saline implants

Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammaplasty, involves surgical placement of an implant behind each breast to increase its volume and enhance its shape. Often, after weight loss, childbirth, or as a result of aging, the breasts lose volume and their shape changes. Also, many women choose to have their breasts enlarged in order to satisfy their desire for a fuller bustline. Breast augmentation can be performed at any age after the breasts are developed.

Silicone Breast Implants:
Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel — a thick, sticky fluid that closely mimics the feel of human fat. Most women feel that silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue.
They come in different sizes and have either smooth or textured shells.
Silicone gel-filled breast implants are approved for breast augmentation in women age 22 or older and for breast reconstruction in women of any age. They are also used in revision surgeries, which correct or improve the result of an original surgery.

BENEFITS:

  • Positive aesthetic results, and data has shown patients often receive a substantial psychological boost.
  • It is often possible to return to work within a week, depending on the nature of your work.
  • No scientific evidence that breast augmentation increases the risk of breast cancer, autoimmune disease, or any systemic illness.
  • No evidence that breast implants affect pregnancy or ability to breast-feed.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Every surgical procedure carries some risk. Potential complications may include reactions to anesthesia, blood accumulation that may need to be drained surgically, and infection.
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation may result from breast augmentation surgery, although they are usually temporary.
  • When a breast implant is inserted, a scar capsule forms around it as part of the natural healing process. The capsule may sometimes tighten and compress the implant, causing the breast to feel firmer than normal. If the capsular contracture is severe, it may cause discomfort or changes in the breast’s appearance. Additional surgery may be needed to modify or remove scar tissue, or perhaps remove or replace the implant.
  • Breast implants can make performing and reading mammograms technically difficult. Placement of the implant underneath the pectoral muscle may interfere less with mammographic examination.
  • As with other surgical implants, breast implants cannot be expected to last forever. If a saline-filled implant breaks, its contents are harmlessly absorbed by the body, usually within hours.
  • Pregnancy can alter breast size in an unpredictable way and could affect the long-term results of breast augmentation.
  • As of May 2000, Federal regulation prohibits breast augmentation for purely aesthetic surgery in women less than 18 years of age

Pregnancy does not affect the breast implants, although the tissue and skin will experience some level of changes.  To minimize its impact, avoid excessive weight gain to limit stretching of the tissue and prevent the saggy appearance.
What Happens to Breast Implants if You Get Pregnant? Can You still Breast Feed?
Implants do not interfere with pregnancy and usually do not affect breast feeding. Becoming pregnant after getting implants on the other hand can change how your breasts look, both short term and long term.
Breasts can change significantly with pregnancy regardless of whether you have implants. Most women become significantly larger breasted with pregnancy and breast feeding. This is known as “engorgement” and does not involve or affect the implants themselves. Once breast feeding stops, the breasts usually change again – women experience loss of volume and sagging. Many women actually end up smaller breasted than before pregnancy and a “touch-up” procedure is sometimes needed to restore a youthful appearance to the breast even if you’ve had breast augmentation before pregnancy.
Will I be able to breastfeed if I get implants?
In most cases, breast augmentation surgery does not interfere with breastfeeding, because milk ducts are generally not disturbed during the procedure. When implants are placed through an incision made around the areola, milk ducts are sometimes disrupted, which may affect breastfeeding. However, not all women are naturally able to breastfeed, whether or not they have cosmetic breast surgery.
Our patients elect to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic reasons, including balancing breast size, compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery, and correcting a congenital breast defect. Under our expert care, patients enjoy great-looking, natural-feeling breasts that are one or more cup sizes larger after the operation.  Please visit our website at www.MarkBisharaMD.com for more information on breast implants or call our office at (817) 473-2120.
