Approximately 50 percent of all men experience some degree of hair loss. Prescription remedies can offer some benefits to existing hair, but hair restoration is the only permanent solution for hair loss. For the very latest technology in hair restoration, Dr. Mark Bishara is now using the ARTAS System. This interactive, computer assisted equipment employs image guidance to enhance the quality of hair follicle harvesting. ARTAS is the first hair transplant robot to improve the most challenging aspects of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
This system enables the harvesting of hair follicles during hair restoration procedures. It offers numerous beneficial features, including an image-guided robotic arm, special imaging technologies, small dermal punches and a computer interface. The ARTAS System is capable of identifying and harvesting individual follicular units to implement the FUE technique. The device, guided by cameras and 3-D imaging software, can perform the dissection of hair follicles individually at a rate of up to 1,000 per hour.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) offers less discomfort and a faster return to normal daily activities than traditional, more invasive methods of hair restoration. Performed in Dr. Bishara’s Mansfield or Southlake office, FUE with ARTAS moves healthy, functioning follicles to the areas of the patient’s scalp most impacted by baldness for more dramatic results. The implanted hairs develop their own blood supply, begin to grow and new hairs are seen a few months after the procedure has taken place. New hair continues to grow over the course of a full year, making the change in the patient’s appearance gradually noticeable to others. Healing time is short, and there is no resultant linear scar as happens with other methods of hair restoration. The only evidence is tiny, white scars left in the donor area, which are the same as those produced by manual FUE.
Robotic FUE with ARTAS increases the accuracy of harvesting grafts to minimize damage to the follicles. It also reduces harvesting time and improves the chances of graft survival. The FUE procedure involves removing hair directly from the donor region of the scalp in individual, naturally-occurring groups of one to four hairs. Dr. Bishara begins the procedure by separating the follicular units from the surrounding skin. The follicular units are then extracted from the scalp. Once a recipient site has been created, Dr. Bishara will implant the follicular unit grafts into the area to take root.
The use of the ARTAS System has significantly increased the accuracy and usefulness of the FUE procedure, and Bishara Cosmetic Surgery is the first hair restoration center in Texas to use the new robotic device for FUE.

Benefits of the ARTAS System- Technology Makes a Difference

The ARTAS System for FUE employs an image-guided robotic arm to separate follicular units from the surrounding tissue for subsequent extraction. The image-guided system allows this step to be accomplished with great precision. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia which makes it painless.
From the efficiency of the ARTAS System in extracting follicular unit grafts to the quality of the grafts to patient safety, the benefits are many. You can receive a high quality hair transplant with a less intensive time commitment, less anesthesia needed to numb the area, improved hair growth rates and a better overall FUE hair transplant experience.

The ARTAS System with Dr. Bishara

The ARTAS System
By the age of 50, approximately 50 percent of all men experience some degree of hair loss. Prescription remedies can offer some benefits to existing hair, but hair restoration is the only permanent solution for hair loss and often achieves a natural, undetectable result.

There are two common ways to treat balding including strip harvesting and follicular unit extraction (FUE).  Strip harvesting is the most commonly used technique right now, and it is an efficient means of harvesting large quantities of follicles.
However, I have stopped offering it as a primary modality for a number of reasons, including patient recovery time and wound morbidity.  It took me six months of training to fully learn FUE.

Benefits of ARTAS System
Robotic technology is used in numerous surgical and diagnostic procedures to improve the efficacy of treatments.  Restoration Robotics has incorporated robotic technology into FUE resulting in the ARTAS system which is the first and only FDA-cleared technology that allows the physician to control the image-guided robot.  I am able to make minor adjustments to dissection depths and angles during the extraction process ensuring my patients receive optimal results.
The ARTAS system also greatly reduces post procedure pain or disomfort as compared to strip-harvesting where patients report a sense of tightness and some degree of numbness for two to three months after a strip harvest.

How the Procedure Works

The patient’s hair is first trimmed before the ARTAS system digitally scans areas of the scalp to identify hair in natural groupings. The selected hair is then precisely harvested using the robot and then transplanted into the thinning areas. These grafts will then grow just like they did before the areas where they are needed to fight balding.
Results will start to show in 3 months and by the 6th month, patients can expect to see noticeable improvements.  The hair will continue to grow and full results will be achieved a year after the treatment.
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplantation procedure is preferred because of its minimally invasive nature and no need for anesthesia or downtime. This procedure is designed to produce effective results with minimal downtime and no damage to surrounding hair follicles. I will help you determine how to achieve the best possible results.  Please contact our office for more information at (817) 473-2120.

What causes Male Pattern Baldness (MPB)?

In the overwhelming majority of males with hair loss, the cause is Male Pattern Baldness (MPB), which is genetically inherited from either side of the family and begins to develop after puberty. MPB occurs when a man is genetically susceptible to the presence of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair on the scalp that is affected by DHT (the hairline, crown and top of the scalp) starts to shrink in its shaft diameter and potential length, until it eventually disappears—a process known as hair miniaturization. The hair on the back and sides of the scalp is not affected by DHT and therefore is “permanent” hair, and is not subject to male pattern baldness. For the very latest technology in hair restoration, Dr. Mark Bishara is now using the ARTAS System. This interactive, computer assisted equipment employs image guidance to enhance the quality of hair follicle harvesting.

The ARTAS® Robotic System

The ARTAS® Robotic System safely and effectively extracts hair for transplantation. With over 8 years of research and development, the ARTAS Robotic System delivers outstanding hair restoration results in an outpatient procedure. Rigorously tested, cleared by the FDA and other international regulatory bodies, the ARTAS Robotic System achieves outstanding results for hair restoration physicians.

ARTAS ScreenshotEach follicular unit is digitally tracked.

Dr. Bishara uses advanced digital imagery to map and analyze the hair in its natural groupings on the scalp. These natural groupings of hair are called follicular units. The ARTAS Robotic System’s precision robotics allow for the precise extraction of intact follicular units for transplantation. Follicular units are removed in a random fashion, within the existing hair, so those areas of the scalp maintain their natural appearance. The ARTAS Robotic System continuously monitors for any movement of the patient’s head, and dynamically adjusts accordingly.

How does The ARTAS® Robotic Procedure Work?

The ARTAS Procedure restores your hair by transplanting permanent hair from the back or side of the head into thinning areas. Dr. Bishara uses the ARTAS System to harvest healthy hair. Using digital imaging technology, the ARTAS System identifies and maps hair in its natural groupings on the scalp. The hair is then removed so that the area retains its original appearance, and then meticulously transplanted into the scalp, based on your treatment goals, to provide a natural looking result.
The transplanted hair grows in gradually over time. Over a period of 3-4 months, you should start to see new permanent hair. At six months, most patients notice steady growth and increasing fullness. Most patients experience complete results in about a year. This new, permanent hair can be styled and cut normally, so you can experience the confidence of fuller hair.

Some of the ARTAS Robotic System’s advanced features:

  • Precision robotics: for precise and accurate movement
  • Image guidance: stereo digital imagery guides all movement
  • Digital visualization: tracks each follicular unit in 3-D space
  • Visual servoing: dynamically adjusts to patient movement
  • Selective harvest pattern: to maintain the look of the donor area
Testimonial of one of Dr. Bishara’s satisfied patients:
“My name is Jonathan W.and I wanted to let you know how amazing my hair transplant surgeries have been due to the ARTAS system. I have experienced only minor irritation in the donor areas and was amazed with the efficiency of the system to be placed in an automatic mode to harvest hair. In my opinion this system is the wave of the future as it relates to hair transplants. Also, I have no visible scarring in the donor areas which to me is wonderful. I hope they continue to improve and expand the abilities of the ARTAS system and thank all those involved for making my great transplant experiences possible.”
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplantation procedure is preferred because of its minimally invasive nature and no need for anesthesia or downtime. This procedure is designed to produce effective results with minimal downtime and no damage to surrounding hair follicles. Dr. Bishara is highly experienced in performing this, and will help you determine how to achieve the best possible results.

The ARTAS Robotic Hair Restoration Procedure

The ARTAS® System enhances manual surgical performance in three key areas where robotics are proven to extend human capability. For the very latest technology in hair restoration, Dr. Bishara is now using the ARTAS System. This interactive, computer assisted equipment employs image guidance to enhance the quality of hair follicle harvesting. ARTAS is the first hair transplant robot to improve the most challenging aspects of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). It received clearance from the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for use in April 2011.

About the ARTAS® Robotic Procedure:

  • Skin tensioner is placed on the trimmed donor area to keep the area taut
  • High resolution visualization identifies follicular units on the surface of the patient’s skin and targets them for harvesting
  • Image-guided robotic arm maneuvers and deploys the two-needle system, compensating for patient movement
  • Inner needle scores the skin, then the dissecting punch separates the follicular unit from the remaining tissue
  • Gentle suction lifts the dissected graft partially out of the scalp, so technicians can remove using forceps
  • Grafts are manually transplanted in the desired scalp areas

A Better Patient Experience

Nearly 35 million American men are candidates for hair restoration, but only a small fraction choose the procedure. Uncertainty about the procedure results and the long recovery times may be too high a hurdle for many patients. Candidates are demanding a minimally invasive technique that provides consistent, safe results.
With the minimally invasive ARTAS® Robotic System, Dr. Bishara can build patient confidence with reproducible, natural-looking outcomes with fast recovery times. There are many patient benefits including:

  • Robotically precise and consistent
  • Reduced treatment times
  • Less discomfort
  • Faster healing and return to normal activities
  • Nearly undetectable donor area with no linear scar
