If you are one of millions considering cosmetic or plastic surgery, then you may want to review this list, and check it off before having a procedure. Here is a list that can help you prepare before your procedure and during your consultation.
Make sure you do your homework to better understand the benefits, know what to expect from the procedure, recovery time, and associated complications and risks.
Research your surgeon: review plenty of before and after picture of patient cases, and look for consistent outcomes. Make sure your surgeon is experienced, qualified and certified to perform your procedure.
Develop realistic expectations: it is important for patients to have realistic expectations. Discuss your goals in detail with your surgeon to understand what you should expect, anticipated downtime and side effects to reduce disappointing results.
Medical history and evaluation in advance: share your medical history, medications and any health issues in advance. Some surgeries require blood work, and medical imaging results to make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure.
Associated Fees: Cost is a big issue for most patients. Find out if the fee is all inclusive. Anesthesia can make a difference, depending on if the surgeon is using a local or general anesthetic to perform the surgery. Also, most procedures are “outpatient” surgeries performed in accredited surgical suites, within the surgeon’s office or clinic.

Here is a list of questions to ask during your consultation:

  • Are you licensed in the state where the procedure is being performed?
  • How many of these procedures have you performed?
  • Do you have hospital and/or surgery center privileges? Is your facility accredited?
  • Am I a good candidate for the procedure?
  • What are the possible risks and side effects?
  • What technique would you recommend to get optimum results?
  • How long will the surgery take and what can I expect during the recovery process?
  • How much time should I take off work?
  • How much will the procedure cost, total? Do you have finance options and payment plans?
  • Do I have the right physical features to get the desired results from this procedure?
  • Do you provide detailed instructions to follow, before and after the procedure and in the case of an emergency?

Cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures are a big step. To get the best from this experience, patients who do their homework, ask the right questions and develop realistic expectations are happiest with their results.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved use of onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox Cosmetic, Allergan) for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe lateral canthal lines, also known as crow’s feet, in adults. Botox Cosmetic is currently the only FDA-approved drug treatment option for lateral canthal lines, the FDA said today.
The agency approved Botox Cosmetic in 2002 for the temporary improvement of glabellar lines (frown lines) in adults. Botox Cosmetic works by keeping muscles from tightening, so wrinkles are less prominent.
Botox Cosmetic is administered via intramuscular injections. Treatment for both frown lines and crow’s feet can be given at the same time, the FDA said.
Boxed Warnings
The approval of Botox Cosmetic for treating lateral canthal lines was based on 2 clinical efficacy and safety studies involving 833 adults with moderate to severe lateral canthal lines who were randomly assigned to receive either Botox Cosmetic or placebo.
The results showed that those treated with Botox Cosmetic had greater improvement compared with placebo in the appearance of lateral canthal lines, the FDA said.
BOTOX® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and also used for the following:

  • to treat overactive bladder symptoms such as a strong need to urinate with leaking or wetting accidents (urge urinary incontinence), a strong need to urinate right away (urgency), and urinating often (frequency) in adults 18 years and older when another type of medicine (anticholinergic) does not work well enough or cannot be taken.
  • to prevent headaches in adults with chronic migraine who have 15 or more days each month with headache lasting 4 or more hours each day in people 18 years or older
  • to treat increased muscle stiffness in elbow, wrist, and finger muscles in people 18 years and older with upper limb spasticity
  • to treat the abnormal head position and neck pain that happens with cervical dystonia (CD) in people 16 years and older
  • to treat certain types of eye muscle problems (strabismus) or abnormal spasm of the eyelids (blepharospasm) in people 12 years and older
  • to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis) when medicines used on the skin (topical) do not work well enough in people 18 years and older

What causes Male Pattern Baldness (MPB)?

In the overwhelming majority of males with hair loss, the cause is Male Pattern Baldness (MPB), which is genetically inherited from either side of the family and begins to develop after puberty. MPB occurs when a man is genetically susceptible to the presence of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair on the scalp that is affected by DHT (the hairline, crown and top of the scalp) starts to shrink in its shaft diameter and potential length, until it eventually disappears—a process known as hair miniaturization. The hair on the back and sides of the scalp is not affected by DHT and therefore is “permanent” hair, and is not subject to male pattern baldness. For the very latest technology in hair restoration, Dr. Mark Bishara is now using the ARTAS System. This interactive, computer assisted equipment employs image guidance to enhance the quality of hair follicle harvesting.

The ARTAS® Robotic System

The ARTAS® Robotic System safely and effectively extracts hair for transplantation. With over 8 years of research and development, the ARTAS Robotic System delivers outstanding hair restoration results in an outpatient procedure. Rigorously tested, cleared by the FDA and other international regulatory bodies, the ARTAS Robotic System achieves outstanding results for hair restoration physicians.

ARTAS ScreenshotEach follicular unit is digitally tracked.

Dr. Bishara uses advanced digital imagery to map and analyze the hair in its natural groupings on the scalp. These natural groupings of hair are called follicular units. The ARTAS Robotic System’s precision robotics allow for the precise extraction of intact follicular units for transplantation. Follicular units are removed in a random fashion, within the existing hair, so those areas of the scalp maintain their natural appearance. The ARTAS Robotic System continuously monitors for any movement of the patient’s head, and dynamically adjusts accordingly.

How does The ARTAS® Robotic Procedure Work?

The ARTAS Procedure restores your hair by transplanting permanent hair from the back or side of the head into thinning areas. Dr. Bishara uses the ARTAS System to harvest healthy hair. Using digital imaging technology, the ARTAS System identifies and maps hair in its natural groupings on the scalp. The hair is then removed so that the area retains its original appearance, and then meticulously transplanted into the scalp, based on your treatment goals, to provide a natural looking result.
The transplanted hair grows in gradually over time. Over a period of 3-4 months, you should start to see new permanent hair. At six months, most patients notice steady growth and increasing fullness. Most patients experience complete results in about a year. This new, permanent hair can be styled and cut normally, so you can experience the confidence of fuller hair.

Some of the ARTAS Robotic System’s advanced features:

  • Precision robotics: for precise and accurate movement
  • Image guidance: stereo digital imagery guides all movement
  • Digital visualization: tracks each follicular unit in 3-D space
  • Visual servoing: dynamically adjusts to patient movement
  • Selective harvest pattern: to maintain the look of the donor area
Testimonial of one of Dr. Bishara’s satisfied patients:
“My name is Jonathan W.and I wanted to let you know how amazing my hair transplant surgeries have been due to the ARTAS system. I have experienced only minor irritation in the donor areas and was amazed with the efficiency of the system to be placed in an automatic mode to harvest hair. In my opinion this system is the wave of the future as it relates to hair transplants. Also, I have no visible scarring in the donor areas which to me is wonderful. I hope they continue to improve and expand the abilities of the ARTAS system and thank all those involved for making my great transplant experiences possible.”
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplantation procedure is preferred because of its minimally invasive nature and no need for anesthesia or downtime. This procedure is designed to produce effective results with minimal downtime and no damage to surrounding hair follicles. Dr. Bishara is highly experienced in performing this, and will help you determine how to achieve the best possible results.

Hair loss is a condition that occurs as a result of a side-effect of medication, aging, genetics, and traumatic injury to the scalp with scarring. Hair loss affects both men and women of all ages. This condition may cause pattern baldness, patchy spots or thinned hair. Most people are troubled by this undesired change to their appearance and may be frustrated with the lack of effective treatments widely available.
Fortunately, there are several treatments available to help promote hair growth or restore hair loss. These treatments are minimally invasive and affordable, and allow patients to enjoy a renewed confidence as thick, full and beautiful hair is restored. Hair loss treatment includes topical and/or oral medications, laser comb therapy, and transplantation.
PROPECIA®:
PROPECIA® is available by prescription from Dr. Mark Bishara and is a once-a-day pill developed to treat mild to moderate male pattern hair loss, a hereditary condition that causes receding hairlines, thinning and/or balding on the top and front of the scalp. This product is proven effective for treating hair loss in MEN ONLY.

Low Level Laser Technology (LLLT)
The low-level laser therapy treatment is also known as “The Cold Laser”. The laser light generated by low-powered (cold) lasers has recently come into use as a non-surgical hair restoration treatment for patten hair loss. The LLLT lasers are called “cold” because their light is absorbed by targeting tissue but does not heat the target tissue as occurs with lasers used to cut and remodel tissue. Treatments must be repeated to maintain hair growth and the only permeant treatment for pattern hair loss is still hair transplantation.
The LaserCap® using the Low Level Technology (LLLT) can help men and women of all ages who suffer from hair loss by emitting pulses of laser light energy to the scalp to stimulate the hir follicles and improve blood circulation in the area, encouraging hair growth once again.
This treatment is non-invasive and is considered safe for most patients, with no known side effects. The technology used during LLLT ensures that no damage will occur to surrounding living tissues, providing maximum results. LLLT has been used in Europe for over 30 years before its recent approval in the US.

Dr. Mark Bishara is proud to offer a wide range of comprehensive hair restoration procedures. The best treatment option for each patient depends on the location and extent of hair loss. Dr. Bishara will take the time to evaluate each patient, discuss his/her individual goals and together develop a personalized treatment plan using one of his many successful hair loss treatment options.  Please call our office for more information at (817) 473-2120.
