Breast augmentation, also called augmentation mammaplasty, involves surgical placement of an implant behind each breast to increase its volume and enhance its shape. Often, after weight loss, childbirth, or as a result of aging, the breasts lose volume and their shape changes. Also, many women choose to have their breasts enlarged in order to satisfy their desire for a fuller bustline. Breast augmentation can be performed at any age after the breasts are developed.

Benefits:

  • Positive aesthetic results, and data has shown patients often receive a substantial psychological boost.
  • It is often possible to return to work within a week, depending on the nature of your work.
  • No scientific evidence that breast augmentation increases the risk of breast cancer, autoimmune disease, or any systemic illness.
  • No evidence that breast implants affect pregnancy or ability to breast-feed.

Other Considerations:

  • Every surgical procedure carries some risk. Potential complications may include reactions to anesthesia, blood accumulation that may need to be drained surgically, and infection.
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation may result from breast augmentation surgery, although they are usually temporary.
  • When a breast implant is inserted, a scar capsule forms around it as part of the natural healing process. The capsule may sometimes tighten and compress the implant, causing the breast to feel firmer than normal. If the capsular contracture is severe, it may cause discomfort or changes in the breast’s appearance. Additional surgery may be needed to modify or remove scar tissue, or perhaps remove or replace the implant.
  • Breast implants can make performing and reading mammograms technically difficult. Placement of the implant underneath the pectoral muscle may interfere less with mammographic examination.
  • As with other surgical implants, breast implants cannot be expected to last forever. If a saline-filled implant breaks, its contents are harmlessly absorbed by the body, usually within hours.
  • Pregnancy can alter breast size in an unpredictable way and could affect the long-term results of breast augmentation.
  • As of May 2000, Federal regulation prohibits breast augmentation for purely aesthetic surgery in women less than 18 years of age

Young Women Undergoing Breast Reduction for Competitive Sports

An international tennis star has made headlines not for her serve but for disclosing her decision to undergo breast reduction surgery, not only to help improve her game, she said, but for relief from severe back pain.

Simona Halep, 21, went from a 34DD to a 34C.
“I think she really caused a breakthrough, where all of a sudden this was not a taboo topic,” said Megan Greenwell, senior editor at ESPN magazine. “When you see people at the highest levels talking openly about these things that opens the floodgates for other people to discuss it as a real issue.”
And it’s not only professional athletes going under the knife to reduce breast size. Carly Mortensen, 19, plays collegiate softball, and decided to have her bust reduced surgically.
“It just felt uncomfortable for me because I had to wear two sports bras every time,”  Mortensen said.
“It was emotionally pretty tough. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be happy with it. If this would help me in life and be a bonus for softball then it’d definitely be worth it.”
More than 100,000 women had similar surgeries last year — some of them, experts say, do it to play sports, according to Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank statistics.
“We are tending to a lot more young patients who realize there’s a surgery out there that can help them, help them feel better and help them become more athletic,” said Dr. Michelle Spring, a plastic surgeon, told ABC News.
But just how much can breast reduction enhance one’s game? After the surgery, Halep climbed 450 spots in world rankings. She’s now ranked number 18.
“I think it’s definitely helped my play because a lot of it comes from mentally being more confident in myself,” she said.
Halep says she’s looking forward to this softball season, when she takes the field for her first official game.

Men may not be as open about their bodies as women, but it’s no secret that guys can have their own set of insecurities about physical appearance. That’s why doctors have seen an increase in the number of men seeking plastic surgery to treat their body. One of the most common complaints among men when it comes to body image is the dreaded man boob, or medically known as gynecomastia.
In recent years there have been many reports in the media about the number of men wanting breast reduction surgery to improve their looks.  As men age, it typically becomes more difficult for them to maintain a svelte physique, even if they continue to diet and exercise. Many men develop fat around their chest, which results in the appearance of male breasts, medically known as gynecomastia.
According to a study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, which released its 2012 statistical report today, anywhere from 40 to 60 percent of men suffer from this issue. Plastic surgeons across the country performed 286,000 breast augmentations in 2012, making it the most often performed cosmetic surgery for the year.  Male breast reduction surgery was one of the top five plastic surgery procedures.
