If you are one of millions considering cosmetic or plastic surgery, then you may want to review this list, and check it off before having a procedure. Here is a list that can help you prepare before your procedure and during your consultation.
Make sure you do your homework to better understand the benefits, know what to expect from the procedure, recovery time, and associated complications and risks.
Research your surgeon: review plenty of before and after picture of patient cases, and look for consistent outcomes. Make sure your surgeon is experienced, qualified and certified to perform your procedure.
Develop realistic expectations: it is important for patients to have realistic expectations. Discuss your goals in detail with your surgeon to understand what you should expect, anticipated downtime and side effects to reduce disappointing results.
Medical history and evaluation in advance: share your medical history, medications and any health issues in advance. Some surgeries require blood work, and medical imaging results to make sure you are a good candidate for the procedure.
Associated Fees: Cost is a big issue for most patients. Find out if the fee is all inclusive. Anesthesia can make a difference, depending on if the surgeon is using a local or general anesthetic to perform the surgery. Also, most procedures are “outpatient” surgeries performed in accredited surgical suites, within the surgeon’s office or clinic.

Here is a list of questions to ask during your consultation:

  • Are you licensed in the state where the procedure is being performed?
  • How many of these procedures have you performed?
  • Do you have hospital and/or surgery center privileges? Is your facility accredited?
  • Am I a good candidate for the procedure?
  • What are the possible risks and side effects?
  • What technique would you recommend to get optimum results?
  • How long will the surgery take and what can I expect during the recovery process?
  • How much time should I take off work?
  • How much will the procedure cost, total? Do you have finance options and payment plans?
  • Do I have the right physical features to get the desired results from this procedure?
  • Do you provide detailed instructions to follow, before and after the procedure and in the case of an emergency?

Cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures are a big step. To get the best from this experience, patients who do their homework, ask the right questions and develop realistic expectations are happiest with their results.

Not so long ago, when a person went in for a cosmetic procedure, the entire procedure was kept under wraps as much as possible.  Though people speculated about whether or not someone they knew had had “work done”, rarely were such things discussed openly in public or even in privacy with friends.
But cosmetic procedures have changed a lot over the years. There are more technologically advanced procedures available today that require a lot less of a financial commitment and significantly less recovery time. The advent of Botox and other injectables and a variety of non-invasive liposuction options have made cosmetic procedures much more accessible and much more appealing to a wider range of people. As a result, more and more people are having cosmetic procedures performed and more and more people are also talking about their procedures more openly. at. Dr. Mark Bishara’s office we strive to help patients feel confident about their cosmetic procedures.

Though more people are admitting to having some sort of work done to cosmetically enhance their appearance, it is generally considered rude to ask another person about cosmetic procedures point-blank.  Many people will talk about their cosmetic procedures if they feel comfortable about it, but asking about it considered to be a social faux pas.  These days, patients are aiming to create natural looking cosmetic changes and when people notice the work that’s been done (and come right out and say it), this can be perceived as an insult.  And what if your friend or coworker hasn’t had any cosmetic procedures performed? Asking could make the person in question feel good about the way they look, or it could make them wonder if they need to consider a cosmetic procedure. Either way, you run the risk of putting your foot in your mouth.
One of the reasons why people change the way they look is because changing one’s appearance alters people’s reaction to their appearance.  It’s considered extremely rude to ask a person about whether or not they’ve had cosmetic procedures performed. It is best to let them confess to the procedure by their own volition.
If you suspect someone has had cosmetic enhancements, give them a compliment about their appearance. If that person wants to tell you about their cosmetic procedure, they’ll find an appropriate time or place to do so. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wonder. Remember, cosmetic surgery is not what it used to be and many people do end up spilling the beans. The whole point of cosmetic surgery is to make noticeable changes in one’s appearance and since approximately 9 million people in the United States underwent some kind of cosmetic procedure in 2011, many people feel like it’s counterproductive to keep their procedure a secret.  Rather than be secretive, many patients opt to clear the air and take pride in their renovated appearance. After all, who isn’t having work done these days?

Breast augmentation plastic surgery is one of the most common procedures performed annually by members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Women may choose to under go breast enlargement surgery for various reasons. These personal reasons may center around breasts that are perceived to be under developed, or because of differences in the sizes of the breasts or from changes after pregnancy or breast feeding.
Some women may be happy with their breasts but just want them made fuller. Often after weight loss, aging or childbirth a woman’s breast volume and shape may change. This too can lead to a woman to seek a breast augmentation. Breast implant surgery performed by cosmetic plastic surgeons is the most popular way to improve breast shape and size. Breast enhancement using breast implants can give a woman more proportional shape and may improve self esteem.
Before and After Pictures:
Are you a good candidate for breast augmentation?
One or more of the following feelings or conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for breast augmentation:

  • you are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small
  • clothes that fit well around your hips are often too large at the bustline
  • you feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or form-fitting top
  • your breasts have become smaller and lost firmness after having children
  • weight loss has changed the size and shape of your breasts
  • one of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the otherDuring the consultation, you will be asked about your desired breast size and anything else related to the appearance of your breasts that you feel is important. This will help your surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they realistically can be achieved. How will my plastic surgeon evaluate me for breast augmentation surgery?Your plastic surgeon will examine your breasts and take photographs for your medical record. He or she will consider such factors as the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin and the placement of your nipples and areolas (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipples). If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift may be recommended in conjunction with augmentation. You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries including breast biopsies, and medications that you currently take. You will be asked whether you have a family history of breast cancer and about results of any mammograms. It is important for you to provide complete information. If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight, be sure to tell your plastic surgeon. He or she may recommend that you stabilize your weight prior to undergoing surgery. If you think that you may want to become pregnant in the future, you should mention this to your surgeon. Pregnancy can alter breast size in an unpredictable way and could affect the long-term results of your breast augmentation. There is no evidence that breast implants will affect pregnancy or your ability to breast-feed, but if you have questions about these matters, you should ask your plastic surgeon.

What type of breast implants can be used for breast augmentation?

The implant is placed in a pocket either directly behind the breast tissue (right) or underneath the pectoral muscle which is located between the breast tissue and chest wall.

The size and type of breast implant recommended for you will be determined by your goals for breast enhancement, your existing body frame, and mass, your existing breast tissue, and the preferences you and your plastic surgeon discuss.  All breast implants include a solid silicone rubber outer shell, called a lumen.
    Breast implant options include:

    • Saline breast implants: Filled with sterile salt water
    • Silicone filled breast implants: Filled with soft, elastic gel

New scientific data on the safety of breast implants is rapidly being collected. In the future, it is possible that additional types of filler materials may become available as advancements take place. Surgical techniques for breast augmentation and breast implants themselves are continuously being refined, increasing the safety and reliability of the procedure. Your plastic surgeon will be able to provide you with the latest information.

Maintaining a Relationship with your Plastic Surgeon

Please remember that the relationship with your plastic surgeon does not end when you leave the operating room. If you have questions or concerns during your recovery, or need additional information at a later time, you should contact your surgeon.

As the season changes, it’s important to update your beauty regimen and fitness routines. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind:

Put your skin first-
As you’re soaking up that vitamin D, don’t forget to pay extra attention to protecting your skin. You’ll be exposed to more sunlight over the next few months, which means wearing sunscreen each and every time you go out is a must. Remember, UV radiation is one of the leading causes of premature signs of aging!
Get fit outdoors-
One of the best ways to spend more time outside is to switch up your workout routine so that you are exercising outside. Walking, jogging, biking and even yoga can all be performed in the great outdoors. However, you still must take the same precautions when working out in the fresh air as you do at the gym. Be sure you stretch thoroughly before and after your fitness sessions, and if you plan on jogging outside, give yourself at least two city blocks before and after you run to warm up and cool down with a brisk walk.
Stay hydrated-
Drinking plenty of water during this time of year can be beneficial both for fitness and beauty. H2O keeps you feeling great as you sweat it out on a jog or bike ride, and water can also keep your skin hydrated, giving you a healthy glow.
-Now’s the time for plastic surgery-
If you’ve been trying to decide when to finally get that breast augmentation or tummy tuck procedure you’ve been wanting, there’s no time like the present. Patients who are more interested in non-surgical options like Botox or soft tissue fillers don’t have to worry about rushing to the clinic however, as these procedures carry little to no recovery time.
Dr. Bishara offers cosmetic surgery procedures that help sculpt the appearance of the face and body to help patients look and feel their best. Breast augmentation, tummy tuck, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections and fillers are just some of the many procedures Dr. Bishara offers.  Please call our office at (817) 473-2120
